An old acquaintance, John Treharne, recently wrote a nice letter thanking another old acquaintance, Ada County Sheriff Gary Raney, for his years of public service. I’d been thinking of doing something similar, and John spurred me to action. I met both of these gentlemen while serving in various capacities on the United Way board of directors. Both of them have chaired that board and done tons of volunteer work and helped raise money for good causes in the valley. I’m proud to have been associated with them in that realm. Of course, both have reached success in venues other than the UW board. Gary, in particular, has had a stellar career in law enforcement, one which will continue in his next job. His contributions to this community, both personally and professionally, are nearly impossible to catalog, but we are in a much better place for having had him here, and I join John in wishing the very best in his next endeavors. Beyond his “public face,” however, Gary is just a plain “good guy” — honest, humorous, engaging — a guy you would just like to hang out with. A real class act. John’s right: Gary deserves everything good that comes to him.
