James Covington of Boise, right, attended Cole from 1956-57. Frank Long of Springfield, Ore., left, said he attended the school from 1936 to 1944.

"They are tearing everything down," Covington said. "When they tear this down, it's gone." He said the Boise School District should have let the people vote and not let six or so people make the decision.

The Boise School Board voted unanimously in August to tear down the building in the hopes of finding a buyer. Preservation Idaho will host a public discussion on how to save Boise's landmarks from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Linen Building, 1402 Grove St., Boise.

"People needed an opportunity to voice their love for this building, for Franklin. They weren't given that opportunity by the Boise School District," said Dan Everhart, president of Preservation Idaho, which organized Tuesday's rally. "People don't want to feel like they can't do anything."
