Q: Why hasn't the Bureau of Land Management updated the information on its Web site about the birds of prey area to reflect its new name honoring Morley Nelson? It's an outrage! - GREG H., BOISE
A: Not everything about the Internet is quick and easy, and apparently this is a case in point.
"That's one of the problems we have with our site," BLM Outdoor Recreation Planner Larry Ridenhour said. "Unfortunately, the way it's updated isn't the most efficient."
The BLM is working on it, he said, along with other updates to reflect the name change.
A large sign with the new name - Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area - was in place on Swan Falls Road south of Kuna for an unveiling ceremony earlier this month. And more changes are in the works.
"A lot is involved in a name change," Ridenhour said. "We have to change a couple of dozen large signs saying you're entering the area, smaller directional signs, interpretive signs É When you think of all the places we have our signs, it adds up."
Factor in brochures, pamphlets and other printed material and É you get the idea.
"I made a rough guess as to how much it would cost to change everything," Ridenhour said. "I figured it would be in the range of $50,000."
The large signs will be redone at the BLM's national sign shop in Rawlins, Wyo.
Turnaround time there, Ridenhour said, is six to eight months.
Updating the Internet site, he added, shouldn't take nearly that long.
President Obama signed legislation renaming the area for Nelson in March.
For readers unfamiliar with him, Nelson was a world-renowned raptor expert who devoted much of his life to protecting the birds in the place that now bears his name. He also was an unforgettable Idaho character and a first-rate human being.
However long it takes to make the changes, it's worth it.
