President-elect Barack Obama is asking Americans to help out in their communities Monday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. Here are some local opportunities:
Taft Elementary School MLK Day Diversity Celebration and Read-In, with the Boise State Black Student Alliance and others, 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, in the school gym, 3722 Anderson St., Boise.
The event, featuring African and Afghan culture, history and music, reading, art projects and more, is open to children from kindergarten to fourth grade.
Organizers are welcoming volunteers and asking that participating children sign up in advance because the day includes lunch and a book giveaway. Contact Summer Jenkins before Monday to volunteer or participate at 870-5084 or summerjenkins@u.boisestate.edu.
Owyhee County Democrats are looking for a crew to clean up a popular fishing and birding spot, Crane Falls Reservoir, along the Snake River at a site about an hour from Boise.

Interfaith Sanctuary, a Boise shelter for men, women and children, invites volunteers to log on to find ways to help: interfaithsanctuary.wordpress.com. Opportunities are available every day.
Also note, Valley View Elementary School in Boise is no longer looking for volunteers in math, reading and playground duty for its event at the school on Monday, Jan. 19.
