Danny Holford wasn't going to let work get in the way of taking his son out for his first hunt on Friday.
The Nampa man told his boss he'd quit if he didn't give him the day off.
"I'm taking my boy out; he's getting a deer," Holford said.
Holford and his son, 12-year-old Mario Trevino, got a bit of a late start Friday morning, the first day of deer season for most of Idaho.
Traffic past their camp on Rabbit Creek Road outside of Idaho City had been heavy Thursday night, Holford said, but up until about 9 a.m. the father and son had heard only three shots from the area north of the road.
"It's not near what I thought it'd be, not for opening day," Holford said.
The two were hoping for snow overnight so deer would be easier to track. And overnight temperatures were cooperating- they kept warm with multiple sleeping bags, blankets, and a tent heater.
As the two readied to head out, Trevino put three rounds of .223 ammunition in his clip, a handful more in his pockets, slung the rifle over his shoulder and headed into the woods.
"All you need is one," his father advised.
Higher up Rabbit Creek Road, a light dusting of Thursday night snow barely covered the ground, but it wasn't enough to be very helpful in tracking.
Forecasts call for continued chilly temperatures and precipitation through the weekend, which might help folks fill their tag.
But hunting wasn't the only activity in the Idahoback-country Friday morning.
A shiny black Land Rover pulled to the side of Edna Creek Road off Idaho 21 and unloaded a group of woman to take a group photo.
They were headed to Atlanta for a "girls weekend," they said. Their husbands and kids stayed home.
It was 11 a.m., and that wasn't too early for them to enjoy some Miller Chills. As they piled back into the car they joked about running through the woods to warn the deer that this was opening weekend.
