More tips and more reward money than officials expected - $11,000 so far - have poured in to help solve the case of a 9-month-old dog left for dead near Greenleaf.
"I think being a pet, everyone takes that to heart," said Canyon County sheriff's Lt. Daren Ward.
The dog had to be euthanized shortly after it was found May 8 near a hops field on Van Slyke and Middle roads.
Though officials originally thought the dog had been beaten, a veterinarian found one shot from a small-caliber gun in the back of the dog's head, deputies said Tuesday.
The reward is one of the largest that local activists and law enforcement officials have seen collected for an animal.
The brutal killing and mutilation of a Meridian horse in April 2007 garnered almost as much, but included a $5,000 gift from a local hotel and money from a radio fundraising drive, said Christine Moore, development director of the Idaho Humane Society's Animal Abuse Fund.
In building the reward in the dog case, the local Humane Society and the national organization each gave $2,500 to the fund, she said.
About 31 individuals gave from $10 to $2,000. One Texas resident sent $1,000; an Eastern Oregon resident gave $2,000, Moore said.
"We usually have a good response, but this is the biggest," she said.
If no one receives the reward, the donations will stay in the Animal Abuse Fund and be used to rescue and treat abused animals, Moore said.
