MOSCOW — The University of Idaho says President Tim White is considering a position at another school.
University spokeswoman Tania Thompson released a brief statement that says White has been approached by another university about a leadership position and that he is talking with that institution. White did not name the institution.
The Moscow-Pullman Daily News reports Thompson had no further information.
White informed Milford Terrell, State Board of Education president, on April 17 about being recruited. He notified the entire board by e-mail on Friday:
April 25, 2008To the Regents of the University of Idaho,
You may be aware that another university has expressed interest in my leadership. This is certainly common for university presidents in this day and age.
Indeed, a particular university has reached out to me with great seriousness about the potential to take the helm there.
Following deep thought and reflection, Karen and I have decided to engage in a discussion with the institution that is recruiting us. It will remain at this stage until I am able to update to you on the status of the institution’s search. I have also shared this information with the President’s Cabinet, Provost’s Council and the chairman of the University of Idaho Foundation board.
My commitment to our effort to advance the University of Idaho is unchanged as I write to you today, and as you know, Karen and I have great affection for the University, its faculty, staff, students and alumni. I continue to work daily to serve this community, you, our Regents, and the people of Idaho. The transformative work in which we have been engaged together has gained national attention. Indeed, because of this collective effort I remain confident that even better days lie ahead.
Sincerely,
Timothy P. White,
President

White has been president of the Moscow school since August 2004. He previously served in several leadership positions at Oregon State University.
White took over at U of I during one of the university’s darkest periods. The schools finances were bleak. U of I’s image had also been tarnished by problems with the University Place project in Boise.
