An Idaho retired Army colonel's offer to donate his cemetery privileges to a lesbian Navy veteran is not getting much traction, but the story is gaining national attention.
Chicago Tribune columnist Rex Huppke wrote about Potlatch, Idaho, resident Col. Barry Johnson's overture to Madelynn Taylor, a Navy veteran who is trying to get permission from the Idaho State Veteran's Cemetery to include her late wife, Jean Mixner, in her final resting place plans at the cemetery. Cemetery rules don't allow lesbian couples because Idaho does not recognize same-sex marriage.
Huppke learned of Johnson's offer to Taylor after reading a Guest Opinion in the Idaho Statesman, which appeared April 30.
The Daily Show segment on lesbian lifestyles Tuesday featured Jon Stewart roasting Idaho officials for their handling of the Taylor situation.
