Lucas Richardson, a 25-year-old Hailey man, was last seen Sept. 12 in the Summit Creek Trail area at the top of Trail Creek east of Ketchum and Sun Valley. He was on his way to a mountain-climbing trip.
On Wednesday, members of Sawtooth Mountain Guides hired by the family found Richardson’s body on the northwest ridge of the Devils’ Bedstead, a peak in the Pioneer Mountains east of Sun Valley. The Custer County Sheriff’s Office announced the news Thursday, the day that the sheriff’s office and its search and rescue team retrieved Richardson’s body with the help of Sawtooth Mountain Guides and Two Bear Air, a search and rescue helicopter service out of Kalispell, Mont.
Richardson’s cause of death is still being investigated, according to Custer County.
The Blaine and Custer county sheriff’s offices looked for Richardson until Sept. 21 before formally ending their efforts. Richardson’s family and a group of volunteers then continued the search.
“The Custer County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend our gratitude to all those involved in bringing closure to this tragic incident. Condolences to the friends and family of Lucas Richardson,” the county’s press release states.
