A bill that would ban the use of eminent domain for alternative transportation routes like bike trails was approved Tuesday by the House Local Affairs Committee.
Senate Bill 1044, which already has passed the Senate. is designed to protect private property rights of people who don't want the trails across their property. Proponents argue the trails and greenbelt are nice but not essential like roads.
Opponents say these routes help people take alternative transportation that reduces the number of cars on roads and lowers air pollution.
The bill now goes to the House floor where it is expected to pass.
