Nampa School Board trustees have unanimously approved a new charter school for the district.
Gem Prep: Nampa will mix online learning with face-to-face instruction. It will start in August 2016 with grades kindergarten through fourth, but expects to expand to 12th grade.
It will be the fifth charter school in the Nampa area.
School officials like the approach to instruction, which district educators are also experimenting with, said Nicole MacTavish, assistant superintendent.
A Nampa trustee will sit on the school’s board of directors as a non-voting member to help facilitate communication between the school and the district.
The group starting the Nampa school also operates Idaho Distance Education Academy, a virtual school with more than 600 students.
