Scammers sent Boise Police Department Chief Bill Bones a counterfeit check, according to Boise Police Department.
Police warned Boise residents to keep an eye out for a similar scam. Scammers send a fake check, which they ask the recipient to deposit and then send back a portion of the amount via a wire transfer. But recipients who deposit the counterfeit checks are responsible for the deposit and will have to pay their bank for the full amount of the check, police said.
If someone receives a check like this they should shred the check and report the scammer, police said.
