Southwest District Health has received confirmation of the first reported West Nile virus case in Canyon County for 2014. The person with the virus is a male in his 20's. He was hospitalized, but is at home now and has fully recovered.
Laurie Boston, Southwest District Health public information officer said that the virus is still a threat, even though nighttime temperatures are getting cooler and days are becoming shorter — both factors that decrease mosquito activity. The virus will remain a threat until a few hard frosts kill mosquito populations.
Human cases of West Nile virus have now been found in eight Idaho counties that include: Blaine, Canyon, Gem, Gooding, Jerome, Lincoln, Payette, and Washington Counties.
There have been no human deaths in Idaho from West Nile virus in 2014.
