Faraidon “Fred” Osmani, a refugee from Afghanistan who arrived in the U.S. eight years ago, once owned a restaurant in Moscow, Russia. For the past couple of years, he’s been trying to open a similar restaurant in Boise. He accomplished that goal early this year, when Kabob House on West Emerald Street served its first plate of Middle Eastern cuisine to Treasure Valley foodies.
With personal savings and some financial help from family members, Osmani and his wife, Vida, bought equipment, leased a building on the Boise Bench and hired four people.
The dishes at Kabob House represent various nationalities, including Afghan, Persian, Turkish and Indian, he says. The restaurant also serves beer and wine.
Q: What inspired you to open this business?
A: I see a lack of various food styles in Boise. Opening this restaurant with authentic food adds more diversity here. I also like sharing our food and culture here, and I think this is a great way to do it.
Q: What makes your business unique and sets it apart from your competition?
A: There is no other restaurant that serves [exactly] the foods that we serve. We have a very cozy and unique interior design that stuns many people.
Q: What do you hope to achieve in the next three to five years?
A: I am hoping to expand Kabob House and open a couple of others in Boise and also out of state.
