Boise secured its first trip to the af2 postseason after near misses in 2007 and 2008.
The Burn (9-2) clinched Friday when the league decided to stick with the standard 16-team playoff format. There had been a proposal to reduce the field to 12 teams.
Boise finished 8-8 in each of its first two af2 seasons and missed the playoffs on a lost tiebreaker both years. This season, the Burn are in good position to secure a home playoff game.
Four teams from each conference -- three division champions and the next best record -- get a home game, and Boise holds a two-and-a-half-game lead on the No. 4 spot with five games remaining.
