Micron Technology Inc. said it’s in talks to buy Elpida Memory Inc., the Japanese chipmaker that filed for bankruptcy in February, adding capacity to make chips used in personal computers and smartphones.

Steve Appleton
Steven R. Appleton went to Boise State University in 1978 on a tennis scholarship.
He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business management in 1982. The next February, he joined Micron Technology Inc. He rose fast, becoming an officer in August 1989.
He joined the company's board in April 1991, stayed on it until July 1992, and rejoined it in May 1994. For most of the period from September 1994 to June 2007, he was Micron's CEO, president and chairman.
In 1999, he established the Micron Foundation, which has donated millions of dollars to Boise State,. Appleton gave up the presidency to Mark Durcan in June 2007.
Flying was a passion for Appleton. He owned a collection of planes and took stunt-flying lessons.
