Michael J. Berenger is being held in the Ada County Jail on a charge of felony robbery after Boise police officers say they watched him knock a man over and try to steal his bicycle early Saturday morning near 6th and Main Streets.

Boise police officers on a foot patrol around 2 a.m. Saturday reported that they watched a man, later identified as the 28-year-old Berenger, step in front of a male cyclist, which caused the cyclist to stop abruptly.

Police then say they saw Berenger grab the handlebars of the bike and ordered the man to give it to him. When the man refused, police say Berenger threw the man to the ground. By that point, the officers got to the men and immediately put Berenger in custody.

The cyclist was not seriously injured by the fall, according to reports.

The victim also told police he did not know Berenger.

Police say Berenger refused to tell them why he attacked the cyclist, so they then arrested him for robbery and booked him into the Ada County Jail.

Berenger will make his initial court appearance later Monday. The charge of robbery is punishable by a five-year minimum prison sentence.
