George Stratton III, 18, twice contacted his father Thursday; once to let him know he was wounded and a second time when he was going into surgery, according to a report from Fox News.
Stratton's father, George Stratton of northern Idaho, told Fox News his son was wounded in his left shoulder.
After being hit and seeing other people "badly shot," the younger Stratton held his arm and ran away, Fox News reported.
Efforts by the Idaho Statesman to contact Stratton's father were unsuccessful. He told Fox News his son was expected to be deployed to Afghanistan in January.
Meanwhile, Mountain Home Air Force Base and Boise's Gowen Field were both operating as usual, according to military officials.
No extra security measures were being taken at either air base, spokesmen for both said.
"We have not changed our security posture, but maintain a heightened state of awareness," said Col. John Bird, 366th Fighter Wing commander. "We will take appropriate measures to protect our people and resources, if necessary."
