On Monday, the league announced its support of permanent absentee voting, which would allow voters to automatically receive an absentee ballot for every election. That could make voting by mail easier.

“The League has a long history of supporting voter registration and ballot access,” said Kathryn Bonzo, co-president. “Permanent absentee balloting is a positive step forward for voters in Idaho.”

The initiative was filed by Idaho Vote by Mail, which has until February 2011 to gather the 51,712 signatures of registered voters necessary to put the measure on the November 2012 ballot. If approved, voters could put the names on a list with their county clerk and automatically receive absentee ballots. Under current law, voters must request an absentee ballot for each election.

Larry Grant, the 2006 Democratic nominee in the 1st Congressional District and chairman of Idaho Vote by Mail, welcomed the endorsement. “The League does wonderful work in educating and informing Idaho voters,” he said in a news release.

In 2007, Idaho’s 44 county clerks backed a bill to provide for voting by mail, but the measure did not advance.
