Nomad nuclear reactor developer Don Gillispie, chairman and CEO of Eagle-based Alternate Energy Holdings Inc., said Tuesday that he has submitted a comprehensive plan amendment application for development of a nuclear power plant on 5,100 acres in Payette County.
"This is a key step to developing an additional nuclear site in Idaho," Gillispie said in a statement.
He still has a rezoning application in process in Elmore County. Previously he sought to get approval to site that plant in Owyhee County.
He said Idahoans are just learning about the economic benefits a nuclear plant could bring to rural communities.
"We believe President Obama's recent pro-nuclear remarks not only reflect the nation's, but the world's view that nuclear power is the key to addressing climate change," Gillispie said.
His previous efforts have drawn controversy and opposition from farmers adjacent to his proposed plant site and from the Snake River Alliance, an anti-nuclear group. The alliance opposes the latest application, too.
Andrea Shipley, executive director of the Snake River Alliance, said Warren Buffett's Mid American Energy spent millions of dollars researching whether Payette County was a good place to build a nuclear power reactor and then pulled out.
"This is a company with money and expertise - two things that Gillispie is struggling with," Shipley said.
