NAMPA - The Nampa Classical Academy claims the state of Idaho has "decided that the Bible is now a banned book in every public school," according to the complaint filed Tuesday in federal court.

The school had said it wanted to use the Bible, and texts such as the Koran and the Book of Mormon, as teaching materials for their literary and historical qualities, not to teach religion.

But the Idaho Public Charter School Commission ruled Aug. 14 that use of religious documents or texts in a public school curriculum violates the Idaho Constitution.

The school, set to open Sept. 8 with more than 500 students, would be one of the largest charter schools in Idaho. Such schools are "chartered" and overseen by the state and get state financing, but provide parents and students with alternatives to traditional public schools.
