A state prescription drug committee has not yet recommended whether Idaho should try to save money by restricting a special class of antipsychotic drugs.

Patients, families and caregivers told the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee on Friday that patients' health - and even their lives - may hinge on access to some drugs that treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

The committee reviewed mental health medicines to see if Medicaid is paying for the right drugs at the right price.

Thirty-seven people testified at the meeting. After public testimony, the committee met in private to discuss its findings. No recommendations had been made by Friday afternoon.

Members were to make recommendations to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. The department is reviewing its months-old decisions to save $2.2 million this year in the Medicaid budget for medicines.
