Boise City Council on Tuesday approved an additional $73,000 to cover expenses associated with Special Olympics World Winter Games, which take place Feb. 6-13.
The city will draw the money from an existing contingency fund. The money will be used for fire and police services and other expenditures. Council had approved $50,000 for Special Olympics-related expenses in June.
Council's approval Tuesday included a provision allowing for up to $100,000, because estimated police expenditures will not be available until after Thursday's RSVP deadline for dignitaries invited to the Games by the Special Olympics.
Several politicians and celebrities have been invited, some of whom would require special security patrols should they attend.
The money also covers an anticipated $44,000 loss in revenue at Idaho IceWorld, which will be closed to the public while it hosts an 11-day speed-skating event.
