Idaho gas prices have hit a 5-year low, yet Treasure Valley drivers drove fewer miles in November 2008 than November 2007, marking the 20th straight month of decreased miles traveled.

The Idaho Department of Transportation recorded 7.9 percent fewer vehicle miles traveled this November than last in the 10-county Southwest Idaho region - the second sharpest decline this year for the Treasure Valley. August's miles declined 8.8 percent.

Statewide, the Idaho Department of Transportation recorded 7 percent fewer vehicle miles traveled this November than last. Year-to-date mileage in Idaho is down 5.4 percent compared to last year.

The driving decline means a decrease in state fuel tax revenue, which is down 9 percent so far this year compared to the same period last year.

Though gas prices reached an all-time high this summer, fuel tax revenues are declining. The 25-cent state gas tax is based on a flat rate, which means the state collects the same amount per gallon regardless of whether gas is $4 a gallon or $1.
