Earl only has a limited amount of time to make up for ruining the birthday party of Hank Lange (Tim DeKay), an old friend who's about to be sent upstate to serve a 20-year prison term. Before that happens, Earl tries his best to grant Hank's wish of having his grandma, hometown newspaper and favorite donuts brought to him in jail. Meanwhile, after Joy calls him a mooch, Randy decides that it's time for him to hold down a job.

Across town, Grissom and Catherine work a triple homicide that involves two Laotian men and a taxi driver. One of the men and the cabbie are found shot to death outside of an apartment building. The other man is found dead in his car, an apparent accident victim, but the evidence points to murder.
