What is it about the Boise Valley that makes us want to brag about it to others, that prompts us to try to articulate the intangibles of our lifestyle here?
That is the question several organizations and companies seek to answer as we collaborate on a series of projects that support recruitment of valley tech talent.
During the past few months, several area tech companies have been working together to identify solutions to the shortage in our area. The Boise Valley Economic Partnership, Idaho Departments of Commerce and Labor and the Idaho Technology Council joined the conversation.
The first of several events was held Aug. 27.

Hosted by Hewlett-Packard, the event was a knowledge-sharing event for recruiters and human-resource professionals working in and with Boise companies to fill the tech-talent pool. A panel of experienced and talented recruiters, including Mike Thiel with Taos, Christina Tierney with Balihoo, Johanna Osterman with Adecco, and Penny Garrison with Hewlett-Packard, provided insights into what has and has not worked in this market. This event was the first of several to come.
Attendees were invited to join a Linkedin group, Recruiting for Boise Valley, to enable local human resources professionals and recruiters to continue sharing resources and best practices. Additionally, BVEP highlighted its "Technology in the Boise Valley" brochure as a resource. It is available to download at www.bvep.org.
One of the most important resources to assist technology companies comes in the form of a new video, "Boise Tech Scene, A Day in the Life." (See story, page 16) BVEP commissioned Rizen Creative and Red Sky to work on the project. The Idaho Department of Commerce and Idaho Power Co. came in as funding partners.
The five-minute video provides glimpses into the lives of several personalities working in valley tech companies. The goal is to share a slice of life and to create a digital asset that companies across our valley can use in their recruiting efforts. The conversations around best practices will continue as BVEP works with local tech companies and support organizations to build a website portal as a landing page for talent interested in the Boise Valley. Building on of the efforts of the Department of Labor's Techjobs site, labor.idaho.gov/techjobs, the portal will incorporate the story of "Why Boise Valley" with resources and access to the available positions and companies in the region.
As long as this level of collaboration and coordination continues, the Boise tech industry will not only grow but thrive as solutions are implemented to meet companies' direct needs.
Thanks to these efforts, progress is being made in transforming Boise into a dynamic environment that can support the growth of new startups.
