Eight-man football at Meadows Valley High in New Meadows took a hit last week when four of the team's 11 eligible players were sidelined by injuries.

Without enough players to field a team, the Mountaineers canceled their Sept. 26 game against Council.

Athletic director Dion Flaming said the winless Mountaineers should be able to put a team together for Friday's game at 1A Division II co-leader and defending state champion Salmon River.

"We are plugging along," Flaming said. "We will have a skeleton team of about 9 to 10 players on Friday."

Flaming said the team has had to restructure its coaching staff midseason.

Head coach Tom Perkins was moved to an assistant coaching role because of work obligations outside of the school, and former McCall-Donnelly coach Mike Howard was brought in to assume the head coaching position.

Friday's game will be the 1A Division II opener for both teams. Meadows Valley finished third in Division II last year, but is 0-5 this season.
