TREND WATCH
It might be a little early to be filling out state brackets, but eight of the 12 teams that appeared in last year's state championship football games are undefeated so far this season.
There are three divisions that could be headed for state title rematches if their respective winning streaks continue.
Here's a look at the unbeaten teams on course to return to the state championship:
5A: Capital
The Eagles (2-0) lost 44-14 to Meridian in the state title game last year, and return eight starters in all.
Capital has started the season with wins over intracity rivals Borah and Boise and will try for its third straight win Thursday against Timberline.
4A: Blackfoot vs. Nampa
The Broncos beat the Bulldogs 46-14 at Holt Arena last year and are off to a strong start this season at 3-0. Nampa (2-0) has knocked off a pair of 5A schools - Twin Falls and Caldwell.
3A: Shelley vs. Fruitland
The Russets (3-0) and Grizzlies (3-0) entered last year's championship with undefeated records, but Shelley emerged with a 19-13 win. Both teams are on course for strong seasons, which could set up a rematch. Two of Fruitland's wins have been against 4A teams.
1A Division I: Oakley
The Hornets (2-0) finished the 2007 season undefeated after earning a 46-12 win over Troy in last year's title game. Oakley is on a 14-game winning streak.
1A Division II: Salmon River vs. Carey
The Savages defeated Carey 46-12 on a late touchdown pass for the 2007 state championship. Salmon River (3-0) is loaded with talent again this season with the return of five starters. The Panthers also are 3-0.
