Eagle High football coach Paul Peterson didn't ask to open the 2008 season at Centennial.

Who would?

"When I first saw the schedule, my first thought was, 'We've got to get to work. There's no messing around here,' " he said.

Centennial has won 28 of its last 30 games at Patriots Field, including 26 consecutive victories from 2002 to 2006.

And while the field is tough, the Patriots are pretty darned good, too. They won four state titles and advanced to nine state semifinals in the past 11 seasons. Centennial missed the playoffs last season with a 7-2 record.

"I think we have good talent," Centennial coach Lee Neumann said. "They're young and inexperienced, so that will be the biggest key."

Eagle has high expectations of its own. It was 4-4 last season, but returns seven offensive starters, including 6-foot-2, 170-pound junior quarterback Taylor Kelly. On defense, six starters are back.

"I really believe in our team and we're going to find out if my belief in my team is distorted," Peterson said. "I think that my team has a serious level of talent and experience and character."
