Cattle feeding lot owners will have to submit a nutrient management plan for review under new rules proposed for Idaho by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
EPA will hold hearings in Nampa, Pocatello and Jerome on the new rules to regulate discharges to surface waters from many Idaho feedlots, including those on tribal lands. Now, feedlots must get a permit under the Clean Water Act for CAFO facilities that discharge manure or waste water into streams or lakes.
Changes from the current regulations would affect where animals are confined and where animal feed and waste are contained. The rules for land application areas, where manure or wastewater is spread and used as fertilizer also will change.
The hearings will be at Fish and Game offices at 1 p.m. Dec. 8 in Pocatello, 10 a.m. Dec. 9 in Jerome and 10 a.m. Dec.10 in Nampa.
