People who are into Alejandro Escovedo get it. People who aren't, well, they probably just haven't heard of the guy at all. He's far from mainstream. Yet, "To call Alejandro Escovedo the godfather of modern country rock would sell him short," begins a Rolling Stone magazine review of his latest CD, "Real Animal." Escovedo, 57, has major fans: Bruce Springsteen asked the singer-songwriter to perform with him at a concert earlier this year. Now-defunct alt-country bible No Depression magazine even named Escovedo its "Artist of the Decade" in the late '90s.
