If one were to make the argument that Baroness brings art to heavy metal, it might be in reference to the band’s album covers, which are painted by singer-guitarist John Baizley. But the sludge-metal group’s thoughtful approach to an aggressive, thundering style of music also is undeniably artistic. This is why critics love Baroness — and why the group’s fourth album, “Purple,” was among 2015’s best of any genre.
