Pay-Per-View / Video-On-Demand
Sundance Film Festival award-winner “ Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” is a different kind of coming-of-age film. While it’s frustrating that it focuses on the eccentric boy (Thomas Mann) over the dying girl (Olivia Cooke), it is a sweet movie about friendship. PG-13 for language, and some sexual and drug references.
Channing Tatum reunites the boys for “ Magic Mike XXL,” a buddy comedy / road movie about beefy guys who take their clothes off in choreographed performances. Rated R but no explicit nudity.
Never miss a local story.
Available same day at select theaters nationwide is Eli Roth’s horror film “ Knock Knock,” with Keanu Reeves (R), and the horror comedy “ The Final Girls,” with Taissa Farmiga and Malin Akerman (PG-13).
Amazon Prime Video
“ Red Oaks: Season 1,” an Amazon original series from David Gordon Green and Steven Soderbergh, is a coming-of-age comedy set in the 1980s as high school buddies have one last summer blowout before college. All 10 episodes now available. Features nudity and foul language.
“ American Horror Story: Freak Show,” the fourth season of the cable horror series, is on both Amazon and Netflix. It’s just plain weird.
“ The Flash: Season 1” is the most fun you’ll have with a live-action superhero TV series. Buoyant and colorful, it is a zippy show with a likable, excitable hero (Grant Gustin), a loyal support team, and crazed supervillains. And you can watch it with the kids.
Also new: the dark superhero noir “ Arrow: Season 3,” the action series “ Legends: Season 1,” and the supernatural shows “ iZombie: Season 1,” “ The Originals: Season 2,” and “ Supernatural: Season 10.”
For the kids, “ The Mr. Peabody and Sherman Show: Season 1” transforms the 1960s cartoon into a modern animated talk show with historical guests and time-traveling trips. It’s history with humor.
The new Netflix Original documentary “ Winter on Fire” casts its lens on the revolution in Ukraine in 2013 and 2014. No rating.
Two acclaimed Showtime originals are back. The debut episodes of “ Homeland: Season 5,” with Emmy-winner Claire Danes, and “ The Affair: Season 2,” with Dominic West and Ruth Wilson, are now available to stream. Both feature adult material.
The metaphysical drama “ The Leftovers: Season 2” is back with new episodes.
“ Doc Martin: Series 7,” the newest season of the British series starring Martin Clunes as an acerbic country doctor, premieres exclusively on Acorn TV before it comes to PBS.
