Locally filmed “ Almosting It” made a great showing on its opening weekend, earning it a second week’s run at The Flicks, 646 Fulton St. in Boise. It also will continue its second scheduled weekend at the Parma Motor-Vu.
Though it didn’t do as well outside the Treasure Valley, it was a local hit. It sold out most of its showings at The Flicks, coming in at No. 2 there, and did well overall among the fare on local screens, according to Rentrak, a national database of film box office results. (Read the review here.)
The film’s premiere at the Egyptian Theatre on June 24 sold out and raised nearly $7,000 for Make-a-Wish Idaho.
Never miss a local story.
Most local films fade away to DVD after a premiere. But director, writer, actor, producer and now promoter Will von Tagen has worked tirelessly to get his film on screens.
“It’s been fun. I enjoy this part of it. I’ve been trying get to as many screenings for Q&As,” he says. “I’m just thrilled to be there. It’s so great to thank the people personally for showing up.”
You can see von Tagen at all the June 30 screenings and again July 3-9 at The Flicks. The film will be down for a few days to accommodate the opening of “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” on July 1.
The next step is to try to book the film outside of Idaho, he said.
Von Tagen shot “Almosting It” in Boise in the summer and winter of 2014.
It’s a sweet-centered rom-com that is set in Boise. Von Tagen stars as Ralph, a would-be writer in his late 20s who is lagging behind his peers in getting his life together. He works at a retirement community, where he befriends an experienced lady’s man, Chet, his best buddy Mort, played by Hollywood veterans Lee Majors and Terry Kiser, and Chet’s girlfriend Gladys (Jane Merrow). Ralph lives with a friend Maggie (Cassandra Lewis), while he is haunted by his ex, Lorane (Annie Bulow), and gets involved with Quinn (Jessica Sulikowski).
But is she really the right girl for him? He spends much of the film trying to figure that out with advice from Chet and company.
Von Tagen currently is working on another screenplay and hopes have his von Tagen International production company up and filming again next summer, he says.
