Check out the photos above for how dancers at Jacob’s Pillow in Beckett, Mass., reacted to Mike Kaplan’s vintage movie poster collection “Gotta Dance!”
Kaplan, who lives in Caldwell, owns one of the largest collections in the world of old-style movie posters. His collection of art from musicals from the U.S. and other countries is particularly fine. They feature vividly drawn images of Gene Kelly, Cyd Charisse, Eleanor Powell, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Marge and Gower Champion and others.
The exhibit was at Jacob's Pillow to help celebrated Marge Campion's 95th birthday. It was exhibited in Blake's Barn, a building Champion donated to the venue 25 years ago. It's named for her son who died in a car accident in 1987. He was 25.
“There was a kinetic reaction from viewers enjoying the art of the dance movie poster,” Kaplan wrote in an email. “The dancing images inspired direct participation and most had never looked at the movie poster as an art form.”
