Idaho Statesman Chalk Art Festival

Calling all artists to come share your artistic talent with chalk! Create a masterpiece on your own or as part of a team (up to four members).

Pre-registration is required for ages 12 and older. Registration is $10 (per square) until the spaces are filled. Kids under 12 are encouraged to visit Chalk Land (registration not required). Additional information is available on the registration page.

Encourage your friends and family to stop by the Festival to vote for their favorite chalk art design for the People's Choice Award.

Melissa Chambers

Karen Bubb
Karen Bubb is Public Arts Manager for Boise City Department of Arts & History. She's also an Affiliate at Boise State University’s (BSU) Centre for Creativity & Innovation in the College of Business & Economics, where she's an adjunct professor.

Bubb consults and provides workshops statewide for municipalities and arts organizations regarding public art, creativity and cultural policy. In 2011 she became a founding board member for Surel’s Place, an Artist-in-Residency program in the home of her good friend and mentor, Surel Mitchell, who died in 2011. In 2008 she completed her Masters in Public Administration and Graduate Certificate for Regional and Community Planning at BSU with a focus on cultural policy. In 2012 she was given a Governor's Award for the Arts for her work in Arts Administration.

Bubb, a Boise native, is an active visual artist who graduated from University of Oregon in 1990 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. She has a passion for working in many mediums including stained glass, encaustic painting, ceramics, printmaking and collage. Her art is represented in numerous private collections and the permanent collection of Boise Art Museum.

Byron Folwell
Studio Maelstrom is a small multidisciplinary design firm, located in the great city of Boise, Idaho. The single key distinction of its work is the integration of many disciplines to create works that are equal parts, art, design, and craft. The firm's diverse skill set and experience allow it to realize a given work in the form, material, and media that best suit the concept. Studio Maelstrom on Facebook

Lauren Kistner
Born and raised in Idaho, I have developed a deep fascination with geothermal activities and other natural phenomenon. I am motivated by line, color, and texture, and the ambiguity between looking and seeing. I explore and alter images for the canvas with the use of a process that allows the works to oxidize and change long after I am finished. My creative act is merely to set the paintings in motion. They are about innocence, growth, imperfection and contentment.

Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in the Boise Department of Arts and History Artist in Residency program and was selected as one of the artists for the Traffic Box Public Art project.

In 2005 I received a BFA in Painting and Photography at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington, and have been actively researching and exploring my career. My paintings have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, including Gallery 154, Wiseman Gallery, and the Modern Art Event.

Marcus Pierce
Idaho artist Marcus Pierce has worked for fifteen years creating both public and studio figurative art. His large-scale public artworks can be seen throughout the city of Boise. He has been awarded grants from the Boise Department of Arts and History, Idaho Commission on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Primarily an oil and acrylic painter, his works are inspired by classical art, while also creating modern techniques that are unmistakably contemporary. Much of his inspiration comes from introspection and social analysis, but he is equally inspired by forefronts of scientific thought. In his current studio work he creates allegorical paintings of tangible human experience to represent themes inspired by fractal geometry, quantum mechanics, and the biology of vision. He focuses on bringing to viewers an avenue of understanding seemingly elusive scientific concepts, by creating works that connect with fundamental human emotional responses.

Geoff Everts
I spent over twenty years in Hollywood animation and have worked on 10 Walt Disney Features; Beauty & The Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas, Hercules, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Fantasia 2000, Atlantis, Treasure Plant and The Princess and the Frog.

EVENT DETAILS & RULES

All chalk artists must pre-register and submit a theme/description of their chalk art design for approval (political or commercial advertisements and statements are not allowed).

Teams are optional — up to four members per chalk art square.

Youth category — ages 12 to 17 (see Rules & Terms)

Adult category — 18+ (if an adult and student are on a team, registration must be made in the Adult Category)

All artwork may be photographed or reproduced and the artist(s) has no ownership rights to the photo and/or reproduction in any form of the chalk art image.

CHALK

Chalk will be provided: an assortment of sidewalk chalk and quality artist pastels will be supplied for each square. However, if you are using a predominant color in your design, you may want to purchase that color before the Festival.

Only non-oil-based soft chalk/pastels in solid form (or mixed with water) may be used for the painting. No acrylic paints, liquid pastels, hard pastels, etc., are acceptable. No tempura base paint may be used.
