The U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday that it will award a $523,935 grant to help about 130 workers affected by layoffs at JD Lumber Inc. in Priest River, Sterling Mining Co. in Kellogg and U.S. Silver Corp. in Wallace.

"The layoffs in Idaho's natural resource industry have had significant impact on the local economy," said Deputy Assistant Secretary for Employment and Training Douglas F. Small in a news release. "Today's grant will provide necessary services and allow affected workers to return to work faster."

This award to the Idaho Department of Labor will provide workers eligible for help under the Trade Adjustment Assistance program with access to services not usually covered under the program, including skills assessment and job-placement help.

JD Lumber announced the closure of its Priest River plant Aug. 1, and worker layoffs occurred Aug. 22. Sterling Mining announced immediate layoffs Sept. 11, and U.S. Silver announced immediate layoffs Nov. 3.
