Veterans a little rusty in Boise State men's return to competition

Newcomers offer some hope

Boise State's Daequon Montreal drives past Willamette's Taylor Mounts Tuesday night during an exhibition game at Taco Bell Arena.

Exhibition games don't necessarily tell you a lot about a team, but here are some observations from the first public look at the Boise State men's basketball team - a 111-72 win over Division III Willamette on Tuesday at Taco Bell Arena.

IMPRESSIVE ROSTER

The 2009-10 Broncos are the deepest and most athletic team that coach Greg Graham - or any other BSU coach for that matter - has fielded.

That combination will allow the Broncos to use different lineups and cause potential matchup problems for opponents.

The Broncos looked good at times Tuesday.

How soon the Broncos can dial in and get comfortable with those lineups will dictate how much of a success this season will be.

All 14 Broncos who played scored.

DECISION TIME

Graham will redshirt three players of the 15 players on the roster - true freshmen Sam Hicks and G.A Hill and either senior Sean Imadiyi or junior Daequon Montreal.

"We have a surplus of big guys," Graham said.

Imadiyi didn't play Tuesday because NCAA rules prohibit returning players who might redshirt from competing in exhibition games.

VETERANS LOOK RUSTY

The Broncos started five returners from last season - Anthony Thomas, LaShard Anderson, Paul Noonan, Ike Okoye and Kurt Cunningham - and the result wasn't pretty.

In the first 5 minutes, the Broncos looked tentative, sloppy and content to jack up 3-pointers instead of pounding the ball inside where they had a huge size advantage.

"Get it inside!" Graham screamed less than 2 minutes into the game.

The lack of an inside game was compounded by less-than-average shooting from the perimeter.

BSU shot 43.2 percent from the field in the first half, including 21.4 percent from 3-point land.

The shooting numbers did improve in the second half - 60.9 from the field. But the 3-point shooting never got going as the Broncos made only 6-of-27 (22.2 percent).

"I think everyone was a little tense," Graham said. "Once we settled into a flow, we were all right."

NEWCOMER RUNDOWN

Boise State has seven new players on its roster. Here's a quick rundown on what each showed Tuesday.

Robert "Reggie" Arnold. The wing showed his versatility, scoring in a variety of ways, including a pair of highlight-reel worthy breakaway one-handed slam dunks. He scored 14 points.

Westly Perryman. The guard is going to make a lot of things happen because of the energy and fast pace he plays. Once he gets comfortable, expect the positive plays to outnumber the bad decisions. He had 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Daequon Montreal. Has a knack of being in the right place at the right time to get the ball - whether it be for a shot or a rebound. He also made some hustle plays and showed his athleticism on some blocked shots. He had 13 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks.

Tyler Young. The redshirt freshman hadn't played in a game since 2005-06 when he was in high school. He took a two-year church mission after high school, so the rust that showed was expected.

G.A. Hill. The 5-foot-8 true freshman walk-on played with confidence, made good decisions and pretty passes.

Sam Hicks. The strong 6-foot-9, 259-pounder is raw, and the redshirt year should do wonders for his game. He's a future fan favorite for his rugged style.

Justin Salzwedel. The redshirt junior walk-on had an off shooting night, which is usually the strength of his game.
