Boise State is turning over its struggling volleyball program to a coach who just completed another rebuilding project.

Shawn Garus, who orchestrated a turnaround at North Carolina-Greensboro, was named the Broncos' coach Tuesday.

Garus replaces Robin Davis, who resigned in late May after three seasons to become an assistant coach at Notre Dame.

"We are extremely excited about Shawn leading our volleyball program and feel very fortunate we were able to find a quality coach like Shawn with the season only a couple of months away," BSU athletic director Gene Bleymaier said in a statement. "We had an excellent pool of applicants for the position and Shawn continually rose to the top throughout the hiring process."

Garus inherits a program that has had just one winning season in the past 10 years and hasn't finished above .500 in conference play since 1999.

The past three coaches - Davis (28-59 in three years), Scott Sandel (32-78 in four) and Fred Sturm (19-64 in three) - were a combined 79-201. Only Sandel (17-12 in 2004) posted a winning year for the program that never has been to the NCAA Tournament.

It's similar to the situation that Garus faced in Greensboro. The Panthers were 0-16 in Southern Conference play in 2004, and then the Glendale, Calif., native had at least 20 wins in the past three seasons of his four-year tenure.

Garus, who spent Tuesday traveling from Greensboro to Boise, was not available for comment.

Garus also has been a head coach at Colorado-Colorado Springs and has been an assistant coach at San Francisco and Texas Tech.

He will have to hire a coaching staff as Davis' assistants left when he resigned. Doug English took an assistant coaching position at George Washington, while Kelle Bond has decided to leave the college coaching ranks.
