The Boise State football team won a WAC championship Friday night at Bronco Stadium.

And they're on the Bowl Championship Series bubble.

Same old, same old.

The No. 6 Broncos clinched at least a share of the WAC title with a 44-33 defeat of Nevada, which entered with a perfect WAC record and would have won the outright title with a victory.

The Broncos (12-0 overall, 7-0 WAC) get the outright title if they beat New Mexico State on Dec. 5 at Bronco Stadium.

The Broncos won their seventh WAC title in eight years. In 2004 and 2008, they were left out of the BCS despite unbeaten regular seasons. In 2006, they made the Fiesta Bowl.

This year's team might need a win by Oklahoma over Oklahoma State on Saturday to make another BCS trip. Oklahoma State, which didn't qualify for the Big 12 championship game, is expected to edge Boise State for the last BCS spot if the Cowboys beat the Sooners.

Broncos fans chanted "B-C-S!" in the fourth quarter Friday night - a cheer that surely was heard by the Fiesta, Sugar and Orange bowl representatives in town to check out the Broncos. Boise State drew a below-capacity crowd of 32,642.

"We've done everything they've asked of us," Boise State coach Chris Petersen said. "Let's hope the system works like it should."

Added WAC commissioner Karl Benson: "We shouldn't even be talking about Oklahoma State."

The Broncos pieced together this win with a combination of a hot start, some vital stops on defense when the Wolf Pack had a chance to scare them, five touchdown passes by quarterback Kellen Moore and tough running by tailback Doug Martin.

Moore's TD passes - which gave him a school-record 38 this year - went to sophomore fullback Dan Paul (three), junior tight end Tommy Gallarda (one) and true freshman wide receiver Kirby Moore (one).

Titus Young added a 95-yard touchdown on the opening kickoff and Martin rushed for 128 yards, mostly in the second half. Martin delivered some punishing blows to tacklers, breaking some tackle attempts and bulldozing a few defenders to get first downs.

"Doug is a big-time running back," Kellen Moore said. "He makes plays out of things when there isn't anything and when there's a hole, he's going to hit it full force."

Meanwhile, Nevada (8-4, 7-1) ended up in a similar position to last year, when it couldn't overcome an early deficit. The Wolf Pack were forced to throw the ball to win and reigning WAC Offensive Player of the Year Colin Kaepernick wasn't effective enough.

The Broncos played man coverage on the outside so they could dedicate as many bodies as possible to the run game.

"We wanted to make them try and throw it," defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox said.

The nation's top rushing team gained 242 yards on the ground - 131 yards below the Pack's average - and didn't complete a pass in the second half until a meaningless touchdown drive in the closing minutes.

Kaepernick was 12-of-22 for 141 yards and three touchdowns. He rushed for 31 yards, 71 below his average.

"We were focused and had good energy that lasted throughout the game," junior nickel Winston Venable said.

The game's most important exchange came late in the third quarter and early in the fourth.

Nevada cut Boise State's lead to 34-26 on a 71-yard run by Vai Taua late in the third.

Three snaps later, Kirby Moore fumbled at the end of a long gain - giving the Wolf Pack the ball on their own 47. The Broncos forced a three-and-out.

On Nevada's next drive, linebacker Aaron Tevis forced a Taua fumble. Venable recovered on the Nevada 33.

The Broncos settled for a field goal - freshman Mitch Burroughs dropped a pass in the end zone - but that gave them some breathing room with a 37-26 lead.

"It feels good to stop them - one of the best rushing teams in the country," Tevis said. "They hit us on a couple plays."

Tevis sacked Kaepernick to force another Nevada punt and Kirby Moore caught a 6-yard fade from his brother for the clinching touchdown with 5:08 to play.

Kellen Moore finished 17-of-33 for 262 yards and five touchdowns without a turnover. It was his third five-touchdown game of the year. He struggled at times without star receiver Austin Pettis, who was injured in the first quarter.

"It wasn't the prettiest game," Kellen Moore admitted.

The beginning sure was - for the Broncos at least.

Young's kickoff return and three straight touchdown drives gave the Broncos a 27-3 lead in the second quarter.

The Broncos led 24-3 last year in Reno and won 41-34.

“I’m getting tired of falling behind and jumping back,” Nevada coach Chris Ault said. “That’s disappointing, it really is. You can’t fall behind a Boise State like we do and consistently expect to stay close."

All three first-half touchdown passes went from Moore to sophomore fullback Dan Paul, who got his first career catch last week.

Paul's catches covered 18, 3 and 1 yards. All came off play action in short-yardage situations.

"Three different plays that look the same," Kellen Moore said. "It's just stuff we hadn't run recently."

The Pack fought back, scoring a key touchdown on a 79-yard drive in the final 2 minutes of the first half. Brandon Wimberly caught a 3-yard touchdown pass with 3 seconds on the clock to make it 27-16.

The Pack got within 27-19 and 34-26 in the third, but never any closer. Boise State still has led every moment of every second half this season.

And they're still talking - or not talking, really - about the BCS with one game left.

"We've got one more game to finish up," Venable said, referencing the season finale against 3-8 New Mexico State. "If we lose, we're not in the BCS. Maybe next week is a better time for that question."
