OVERVIEW

The Broncos got through an awkward early season schedule undefeated - and, once again, in the Bowl Championship Series conversation. Boise State played just two games in September. Now the season gets much more rigid, with eight games in eight weeks including seven straight conference contests to end the regular season.

OFFENSE

Freshman quarterback Kellen Moore has been spectacular, even exceeding the highest of expectations. Moore is completing 72 percent of his passes for nearly 300 yards per game. And, somehow, the Broncos are utilizing all of their weapons in the passing game with 11 different receivers catching passes against both Oregon and Louisiana Tech. The running game, however, has been inconsistent. Boise State is averaging just 3.8 yards per carry. No back, including Ian Johnson, has had a 100-yard game and the Broncos' 140 yards per game are the fewest since Chris Petersen became offensive coordinator in 2001. Despite the sub-par running numbers, the Broncos are moving the ball, scoring points and winning games.

Grade: B+

DEFENSE

The Broncos have developed a physical style on defense and, through four games, have emerged as a major strength. Opponents are averaging 12.2 points per game, a product of the Broncos' ability to make key plays in their own territory. Boise State has 32 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, five interceptions and four fumble recoveries. Outside of one quarter against Oregon, everyone is contributing. Safeties Jeron Johnson (38 tackles) and Ellis Powers (28) have added that physical dimension. Too physical for some Oregon fans. The linebackers are better than last year. Cornerbacks Kyle Wilson and Brandyn Thompson have been very good. The defensive line, led by Mike T. Williams, is producing.

Grade: A-

SPECIAL TEAMS

Kicker/punter Kyle Brotzman is giving the Broncos another weapon. He is 4-for-5 on field goals and is averaging 47.8 yards per punt with an unorthodox, but effective rollout punting style. The Broncos depth is paying dividends on special teams. Ian Johnson has one blocked punt and forced another 3-yarder against Oregon. With more skill position players to sprinkle into the special teams units, the Broncos are more capable of springing returns on every kick.

Grade: A-

COACHING/INTANGIBLES

The staff deserves a lot of credit - the offensive and defensive game plans against Oregon were brilliant - for molding a young team into such a solid unit so quickly. Petersen believes the Broncos have a lot of room for improvement, which has got to be scary for the rest of the WAC. If Moore and his young teammates continue to develop, the Broncos' dynasty will roll on. Another BCS game appearance - not out of the question - would elevate the program to another level.
