Former Boise State cornerback Orlando Scandrick made a great first impression with the Dallas Cowboys over the weekend.
Scandrick, a fifth-round pick in last month's NFL Draft, shined during the Cowboys' mini-camp.
"You know who is the best player you got in the draft?" team owner/general manager Jerry Jones asked coach Wade Phillips,
according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram."No," Phillips answered.
"Scandrick," Jones replied. "He's going to be better than all of 'em you've got."
According to the Dallas Morning News, it was former Hawaii coach June Jones — now the coach at SMU — that told this to Phillips.
The Cowboys drafted Arkansas running back Felix Jones and South Florida defensive back Mike Jenkins in the first round. Scandrick was the team's fifth of six draft choices.
Scandrick said Monday that he had not seen the quote, but felt good about his performance at the camp.
"I made some plays," he said. "I tried to have fun and get better every day and I think I did that."
The Cowboys appear loaded in the secondary with starters Terrence Newman and Anthony Henry returning. The team also traded for suspended cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones this offseason. Along with Jenkins, Scandrick should be competing for a backup role and a spot on special teams.
"What will dictate how much I play is how I adapt to the speed of the game," Scandrick said. "The quarterbacks are a lot better. All these receivers are good. It's going to take an extreme amount of film study and discipline."
JETS WORK OUT TADMAN, MILLER
Former Boise State safety Marty Tadman had a free-agent tryout with the New York Jets over the weekend. Tadman and former Bronco offensive linemen Tad Miller were among 34 tryout invitees at rookie camp.
