BOISE - Paul Sellers, who was mauled by a grizzly sow in the Gallatin National Forest near West Yellowstone on Tuesday, described the attack this weekend to KIVI-TV, Today's Channel 6.
"I kind of came around the corner and there was a large grizzly right in front of me," Sellers said from his hospital bed.
"The bear lunged at me," he said. "It caught my inner thigh and cut a gaping hole into my left inner thigh. As I was falling back I got into a fetal position and tried to cover my head. The bear bit into my right shoulder. Just a powerful gruesome bite into my shoulder. You could hear the bones crackle when it went in."
His wife told the Idaho Statesman on Thursday that Sellers walked more than two hours to find rangers. He then was transported to a Rexburg hospital by ambulance.
He was equipped with bear repellent spray and a pistol, but the attack happened so quickly he wasn't able to use them, a national forest spokeswoman said.
