The Idaho Stampede selected former University of Alabama player Jermareo Davidson in the first round of the NBA Development League Draft on Friday night.
The 6-foot-10, 230-pound forward was the third pick overall, behind 6-9 center/forward Chris Richard (Florida Gators, to the Tulsa 66ers) and 6-8 power forward James Mays (Clemson Tigers, to the Colorado 14ers).
Davidson was a second-round NBA pick of the Charlotte Bobcats in 2007. He was waived by the Bobcats in training camp this season.
Last year, Davidson split time between Charlotte and the Sioux Falls SkyForce of the D-League.
He averaged 3.2 points and 1.6 rebounds in 8.5 minutes a game with the Bobcats. With the SkyForce, he averaged 18.0 points and 9.8 rebounds in six games.
"We are really excited about the talent that we were able to get in this year's draft to go along with the guys we have coming back," Stampede coach Bryan Gates said.
"Jermareo is exactly what we needed - a great complement to (returning player) Jason Ellis. He's really athletic and long.''
Gates said he expects Davidson in Boise when training camp opens Nov. 16.
"He could go overseas, but he wants to play in the NBA,'' Gates said. "He needs to get bigger, he needs to play, and he needs to show people he is developing.''
Idaho, which drafted a total of 10 players Friday, has seven previous players coming to training camp: Ellis (6-6 forward), Coby Karl (6-5 guard), Brent Petway (6-6 forward), Jamaal Tatum (6-2 guard), Ryan Appleby (6-2 guard), Reggie Larry (6-6 forward) and Tim Barnes (6-0 guard).
In addition to Davidson, the other nine players Idaho drafted Friday:
Second round: Ernest Scott, F, 6-7, 225 pounds, Valdosta State.
Third: Anthony Coleman, F, 6-10, 220, Long Beach State.
Fourth: Antoine Jordan, F, 6-5, 205, Siena (traded Jordan to Tulsa for Keith Closs, a 7-2 center formerly with the Los Angeles Clippers. The trade is pending league approval).
Fifth: Mildon Ambres, F, 6-6, 215, Southern Nazarene.
Sixth: Lanny Smith, G, 6-3, 190, Houston.
Seventh: Casey Cook, F, 6-8, 220, Cal State Santa Barbara.
Eighth: Rashad West, G, 6-1180, Hampton.
Ninth: L.P. Levros, F, 6-6, 210, Rhode Island Community College.
Tenth: Ryan Schmidt, F, 6-8220, Western Oregon.
Complete rosters for each of the 16 D-League franchises will be comprised of the 10 players drafted Friday, along with returning, allocated and local tryout players. Rosters will be reduced to 12 players Nov. 20 and opening-day 10-man rosters must be set by Nov. 26. Each team will play one preseason game between Nov. 19 and 25.
The Stampede open their season Nov. 29-30 with home games against the Anaheim Arsenal. They play in Qwest Arena in Downtown Boise.
