Downtown is evolving into a vibrant place to live, work and play. The latest addition will be a free evening summer concert series that kicked off this June at Meridian City Hall's open-air amphitheater.
Why it's cool: The walkable downtown maintains a small-town atmosphere with a farmers market and the iconic Sunrise Bakery & Cafe, where $5 still can buy a hamburger.
But a more contemporary look also is taking hold. Lunch and dinner crowds can now choose between Neapolitan pizza, sandwiches, salads and 20 different wines at the Flatbread Community Oven Pizzeria and Wine Bar in the Generation Plaza.
How to get there: Take I-84 west to Exit 44, turn right on Meridian Road.
