Flagstaff to ban drivers, cyclists from texting

The Associated PressJuly 17, 2014

— City officials in Flagstaff have approved a ban on texting while driving or riding a bicycle.

The Arizona Daily Sun reports (http://bit.ly/1rk2JDR) the Flagstaff City Council unanimously voted to enact the ban Tuesday night.

The ordinance, however, does not go as far as a county-wide ban.

Coconino County passed a ban in May that forbids all cellphone use without a hands-free device.

The Flagstaff ban is limited to texting or typing for emails or any instance messaging program while a vehicle is in motion. But motorists and cyclists can text or email if they are at a red light or pulled over on the side of the road.

Council members say no county officials reached out to them about coordinating efforts.

The city ban will become law Aug. 15.
