It is as difficult for a nation to maintain its greatness as it is to achieve it. History is replete with the rise and fall of past nations, kingdoms and civilizations. Spain, Greece, Rome, England and a myriad of others have had their day in the sun and then crumbled and fell.
Edward Gibbons studied the decline and fall of the Roman Empire. He identified five conditions that led to the decay and eventual destruction of Rome.
1) Rapid increase of divorce; and the undermining of the dignity and sanctity of the home. 2) Higher and higher taxes and the spending of public monies for free bread and circuses for the populace. 3) Mad craze for pleasure; sports becoming more exciting and brutal. 4) Building of gigantic armaments when the real enemy was within; decadence of the people. 5) Decay of religion - faith fading into mere form, losing touch with life and becoming impotent to warn and guide the people.
Almost 75 percent of Americans feel America is in decline. They fear we are no longer an exceptional nation, that we have lost our way. Maybe history can serve as a wake up call and help us rediscover our roots.
