Update: Arrowrock crash that killed toddler yields manslaughter, DUI charges

July 16, 2014

A 31-year-old Mountain Home man faces vehicular manslaughter and DUI charges in connection with a May 23 crash into Arrowrock Reservoir that killed a 2-year-old.

Court records show the charges against Lawrence Lutton were filed Wednesday, but details about the case were not available from the Boise County Prosecutor’s Office or the county clerk.

An Idaho Department of Transportation incident report, however, gives some background on the charges. According to the report, a blood-alcohol test on Lutton came back June 27, showing a blood-alcohol level of 0.092, higher than the legal limit for drivers of 0.08 percent.

Lutton is scheduled for arraignment on the charges Aug. 11. Initial reporting on the crash indicated Lutton was from Lowden, Wash., but court records indicate he lives in Mountain Home.

The Boise County Sheriff reported that Lutton was driving west along Arrowrock Road about 8 miles east of Idaho 21 at about 11 p.m. on the Friday before Memorial Day when his Toyota plunged into the reservoir. The incident report found that Lutton lost control while rounding a curve, struck an embankment, overturned and went into the reservoir.

Lutton and his two sons, ages 2 and 5, were hospitalized. The younger boy, Riley Lutton, died three days later at a Boise hospital. He was in a safety seat in the back of the vehicle when the car crashed.

Arrowrock Road is an extremely narrow two-lane dirt road notorious for its blind corners.
