Firefighters worked through Sunday afternoon on a small fire in steep terrain at Table Rock in east Boise.

A fire below the cross was reported at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday. The cross itself was untouched by flames. The cause of the fire is not yet known, but witnesses told investigators they heard fireworks before the blaze, according to Boise Fire Battalion Chief Tom Pawek

Firefighters attacked the blaze — about 5 to 10 acres — from both above and below, Pawek said. The nearest houses were a half mile to three-quarters of a mile away.

"It was burning downhill and had 4- to 5-foot flames," Pawek said.

He said the fire was out within a couple of hours, but because the fire was believed to have burned into root systems they had to be dug up and watered down.

Pawek said Bureau of Land Management firefighters took over the mop up at about 2 p.m. BLM and Boise police are investigating the cause of the fire, he said.
