Letter: Bachelder

July 10, 2014

Carol Bachelder's letter in the June 25 issue is a slap in the face to all citizens of Idaho. She is very obviously a person of faith, in that I have not ever met a secular humanist that was against gay marriage unless they were actually bigoted towards homosexuals.

She claims we are hoodwinked by homosexuals calling their actions "rights." While rights are in the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence states that "all men are created equal" and we are entitled to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." I wonder, however, how she came to the interpretation that only straight citizens can and should be afforded these considerations. Why should she be allowed to marry, adopt children or visit her hospitalized partner and Mr. Gregg cannot? It seems to me that Ms. Bachelder is trying to be right politically since she cannot prove to be right theologically. Her letters are filled with concealed hate, and Mr. Gregg's letter was filled with open sorrow and elation.
